When history meets modern luxury: inside the new Battersea Power Station

Battersea Power Station Doyouspeaklondon Lifestyle London Blog

It made the buzz in October 2022 when it reopened. Battersea Power Station is now London’s most exciting new shopping and leisure destination! Nestled within the iconic Grade II* listed building, this revitalised landmark blends history with modern luxury. From unique shops to amazing dining spots and entertainment venues, there’s something for everyone.

Today, DOYOUSPEAKLONDON invites you to take a peek inside this incredible historical and architectural wonder.

Battersea Power Station

Battersea Power Station is located on the south bank of the River Thames, adjacent to Battersea Park. It is easily accessible by tube and bus: you can take the London Underground to Vauxhall station or Sloane Square (as I did), and then either walk or take a short bus ride.

Alternatively, you can take a train to Battersea Park station and walk approximately 15 minutes to reach the Power Station.

I find it incredibly convenient to plan a visit there, and it should definitely be on everyone’s must-do list when visiting London. But first, let’s delve into the building’s history…

Battersea Power Station rich history (in brief)

Between the 1930s and 1980s, Battersea Power Station operated as a key source of energy for London. At its height, it generated a fifth of the city’s electricity, powering iconic landmarks like the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace.

Here’s a brief history of Battersea Power Station, outlining its major facts and developments over the past few decades.

In 1929 the construction began with Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, famous for Britain’s red telephone boxes, joining the project. Funnily enough, originally, the chimneys were planned to be square, not circular.

In 1940, RAF pilots used the white vapor plumes from Battersea Power Station’s chimneys to navigate home in misty conditions. Similarly, the Luftwaffe used these plumes for navigation, which contributed to the Power Station avoiding significant bombing.

In 1977, the history of the Power Station collided with pop culture: an inflatable pink pig placed between Battersea Power Station’s southern chimneys graced the cover of Pink Floyd’s album, Animals. Originally tethered, the pig broke loose, drifting into Heathrow Airport’s flight path. Police helicopters tracked its journey until it landed off the coast of Kent!

After receiving Grade II listed status from Historic England in 1980, Battersea Power Station ceased generating electricity in 1983. It was purchased in 1987 by Battersea Leisure (for a theme park project) and again in 1993 by Parkview.

In 2012, SP Setia, Sime Darby Property, and the Employers Provident Fund purchased Battersea Power Station, ending decades of disuse. Redevelopment of the 42-acre site began the following year, transforming it into a vibrant community with homes, shops, cafes, restaurants, cultural venues, and open spaces for London.

Battersea Power Station welcomed the public for the first time on Friday, October 14th, 2022.

Battersea Power Station is an incredible place to explore, boasting stunning architecture that always  inspires me whenever I visit it.

The area exudes dynamic vibes, transforming into a landmark and revitalising one of London’s most innovative neighbourhoods. Today, it’s a bustling hub where Londoners, tourists, and residents alike come to shop, dine, live, work, and play – a true economic and social giant!

All renowned and popular brands are available for shopping here, alongside a wide selection of restaurants. It’s a new architectural shopping center that will delight both locals and tourists alike.

The only downside might be the price level, which reflects the new beauty of the place and its historical heritage for sure…

Une reconversion tardive mais réussie ! L’architecture a même conservé l’ambiance “industrielle ” du lieu . La visite, complétée par la montée au sommet doit être riche en sensations !
