221B Baker Street in London is undoubtedly one of the world’s most iconic addresses. As my son is a true fan of Sherlock Holmes’ thrilling adventures, we’ve had the pleasure of visiting it not once, but twice in the past 18 months!

Anyone who shares a love and passion for Sherlock Holmes will be thrilled to explore this iconic place. But even for those less familiar with the detective’s tales, the museum is a captivating tribute to Victorian times – offering a unique chance to step back in history through every detail on display!

Today, DOYOUSPEAKLONDON invites you to explore Sherlock Holmes museum.

The Sherlock Holmes Museum

The iconic Sherlock Holmes Museum opened in 1990. It now attracts thousands of fans from around the world who come to pay homage to their literary hero.

Stepping into this home feels really special. The beautiful facade, the London ‘Bobby’ in traditional uniform at the door and the shop (which you have to pass through to get your tickets, even if booked online) filled with classic literary items all contribute to a memorable experience.

According to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, Sherlock Holmes lived here from 1881 to 1904. Here’s a fun fact: it’s located at 221B, even though the building sits between numbers 237 and 241!

The rooms have been lovingly kept just as they were, giving visitors from around the world a peek into the life of the renowned detective and an authentic taste of Victorian London.

Sherlock Holmes Victorian Home

This four-story Georgian townhouse, built in 1815, used to be a lodging house for many years. Now it’s recognized for its architectural and cultural importance, complete with a blue plaque celebrating Sherlock Holmes’ time here.

Your visit will begin with a comedian guiding you through the first-floor rooms.

They might move a bit faster than you’d like, but that’s just how it goes at popular spots that attract lots of tourists!

I decided to snap a ton of pictures during my visit so I could take the time to quietly observe all the details afterwards. The first two rooms are absolutely packed with objects everywhere, it’s fascinating!

Big fans of the detective will definitely appreciate every detail. Personally, I left the museum inspired to dive back into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories!

The visit continues upstairs to more rooms, which feature fewer personal items but showcase excerpts and elements from the author’s literary works, along with some iconic objects related to the famous character.

On the third floor, there’s a display of scenes from Sherlock Holmes stories, complete with wax figures that bring the main characters to life. The room was set up differently during the two times we visited.

Sherlock Holmes Museum in Switzerland

If you’re a huge fan and haven’t had your fill of this museum, I’ve heard there’s another one in Meiringen, Switzerland. It’s located in a small church and features more items related to the legendary detective!
