I love Art. I think Art reveals its time and tells us a lot about the artists’ culture, history, level of freedom when it comes to create. I heard of the Affordable Art Fair quite recently, but this year marks the seventeenth return of the Fair to Battersea Park. I spent my day there, willing to figure out what means “Contemporary Art” today.
Art for everyone
The Affordable Art Fair is hosting 110 galleries, representing 1000 artists and artworks priced between £100 and £5,000. The idea is that everyone must be able to appreciate and buy art, whatever background in art they have. And as a matter of fact, the Fair exhibits a wide range of artworks: paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, with a large choice of styles and techniques. Everyone should be able to find the right match for their needs…or purse! Look at my selection of interesting artists and art pieces…
Paintings
Some contemporary paintings have an incredible impact on our imagination…
These paintings are not considered as innovative breakthroughs, but I am always stunned to see how colors and shapes can develop our imagination and feelings. I like this abstract art a lot!
Jennie Ing
Natasha Barnes
What is the definition of contemporary art? More than a gift, it is a new way of thinking. Being a contemporary artist may induce being able to innovate with new techniques and materials…Let’s see what the AAF is showcasing in that way…
Ming Wei tang
This is a subtle painting: just oil on canvas and perspective effects.
Andy Reid
I loved the blurred effect here!
Paul Jensen “Curious Calf”
Javier Mulio
These two paintings are really impressive, as they are as realistic as photographies!
Jeon Nak
These 3D art pieces were amazing: at 1meter distance, you feel as if you’ll be swallowed by them! Very surprising technique!
Kwan Wee Lee
From the same gallery, Able Fine Art Gallery in NY, this is a painting with an irregular shape that pictures a human with Korean stamps.
G Catlow “the art movement”
I like this use of papers from different colors to create this artwork, which comes for the artist as a book.
Russell Hatton
This is my favorite one: polished oil on aluminium. The technique seems to be complex, but the result is breathtaking! The red artwork is for me like an improvement of a Rothko… Brilliant!
Sculptures
In this section, I have found…
Common sculptures (remembering Brancusi’s animals)
A creative “face and profile” Picasso sculpture…
A “Steve Jobs” sculpture in aluminium made by Jung Wum Sik, with several layers of material.
A tiny sculpture to put on a shelve…
A philosophical zebra made with papers saying in particular “savour every moment”….
Other artworks
Then, I have noticed interesting pieces of art, mixing different techniques…
Malo “La vie ordinaire d’un homme invisible” (the ordinary life of an invisible man)
I like this photography, which has the impertinence Magritte used to have when painting.
These creations from Havat, the one below highlighting a sleepy personality: Jean-Paul Gaultier…
This is seen as a cabinet to be filled with the capsules you choose, like a “customized art”…
This is rather in-between sculpture and painting, as the boy is in fact … a sculpted hole! You normally add material to sculpt, but on the contrary here, the material has been removed gradually to obtain a human shape. Stunning!
Workshops
This is great news for young artists or for curious people: many workshops take place during the event…
You just drop in and enjoy crafty activities…!
The Affordable Art Fair is a great event, where you can spend hours looking for artistic treasures or for a better understanding of contemporary art.
Free shuttle buses are at your disposal at the Sloane Square tube station, to make this experience be total and easy. Go to the venue at Battersea Park and share on this blog the most surprising artwork you have seen!
