This is definitely the most original Pub I have ever been to: Waxy O’Connor’s received the award of “best Irish Pub” in 2018. No wonder. Located in Soho, this place is a labyrinth where you want to stick around to be sure to see all the details… Let’s dive into this singular atmosphere!
A unique atmosphere
London counts many pubs, of course. But if you’re looking for something really different, go to Waxy O’Connors as it provides a singular setting you can only be impressed by.
You access the pub via 2 roads, Wardour Street and Rupert Street in Soho London area. As soon as you’re inside, you’ve got the impression either to enter a church (with its ornate wood panels, stone walls, stained glass windows and cushioned pews) or a Harry Potter set (with all those singular sets and props)!
We were completely taken by surprise and chose to wander around the place before ordering anything at the bar. Waxy O’Connors counts 4 bars over 6 levels and a multitude of details in the interior design, which are part of the pub drawcard.
All rooms are tiny and there are many corridors and stairs, nooks and crannies, even a preserved tree with trunk and branches rising up from the lower floor of the pub… that’s really worth a visit! Although you will need some time to get used to the darkness inside (which is part of the feeling it is really a cavern-like pub).
This pub really has a singular aspect and a strong personality. Pub lovers and especially Irish ones will obviously be pleased!
An Irish pub in London
Waxy’s was named after an 18th century famous candle maker from Dublin. It has several locations (London, Manchester, Glasgow) and “gained recognition for its warm hospitality, friendly staff, traditional homemade dishes and an extensive range of craft beers, spirits and whiskeys”. It has won a few awards so far, including “Irish pub of the year – Europe” in 2018.
We quite enjoyed our lunch at the Waxy’s, composed of traditional dishes: a burger and a roast chicken and beer. My husband was tempted by the whiskies so I guess we’ll have to come back at least once in the evening …
For those coming during the day, Waxy’s is a great place to go to in London as you’ll better enjoy the singularity of this venue.
But for those looking for entertainment, and lively atmosphere, the evenings might just be preferable.
The pub offers live music four nights a week, including Irish trad sessions every Sunday night at 8:30 pm. And of course, it also has three large screens for showing all major sporting events including the GAA, Rugby and football.
If you were looking for a pub like you’ve never seen before in London, I hope this post will inspire you. Feel free to share your experience afterwards in the comments below!
